Our discussion of Cinematic Expression will confine to basic elements of cinematography. Thus Light, Lens, Camera, Exposure and Composition. In many respects, cinematic sequence can be compared to symphony where each instrument plays individual part in order to create cohesive overall entity. Needless to say, not only must they play in tune but also instrumental arrangement is important as it determines closeness of the description to the real theme. It seems like similarities between both creative processes are obvious. In cinematography, instruments at our disposal are the elements of cinematic expression. To play in tune means that applied choices need to serve common purpose. It is up to cinematographer's discretion that choices made relate to the quality of emotion to be described.
Example:
Sc1. Ext/Day - Teenagers in love - School
As they look at each other holding hands.
What qualities come to mind (?)...
Purity, Optimism, Idealism, Innocence, Tenderness
Which instruments to choose... (?) Perhaps:
Light - Soft (tenderness)
Lens - 85mm/Iris Wide open/Shallow Focus (External world does not exist)
Color - Pastel (Innocence/Purity)
Exposure - Normal
Camera Movement - Slow, deliberate (push in ?)
True... there are no rules for subjective interpretation yet, it helps to have a system.
