I’m going to try to put this into words. I certainly won’t do it justice. The film expression workshop I just finished with you was beyond tremendous. I worked for several years as an ENG camera operator in the Netherlands. Lately, I started to feel I missed some richness in my work. Somehow, I knew it was the lighting. I’ve read many books about lighting. I had bought my light kit. Somehow, it still felt like I was gambling. Going to the Film Academy in Holland is nearly impossible. So, I searched the internet for hands-on training. That’s when I found Janusz.
Looking back, I realized Janusz’s film workshop is all you need to learn to understand the light. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone serious about becoming a cinematographer. After working as a news cameraman for three years in the Netherlands, I was eager to learn more about lighting. This feeling was getting stronger every day. Studying cinematography at a film school in Hollywood seemed like a good idea to me. The issue was that even after the first semester, I didn’t know how to light a simple scene. I was quite disappointed by the huge amount of money I spent on this. Not feeling satisfied at all, I decided to quit school. I then started looking around for other possibilities. Luckily, a friend sent me the link to the website. Doing the 5-day workshop was the best decision I made during my time in Los Angeles. Janusz helped me to approach lighting differently than I did before. He made me think about lighting a scene, instead of just trying what will look good on the video monitor.
Janusz opened the doors for me. Now, I feel ready to fly out on my own.

The course of Cinematographer Janusz in Florence, Italy, was an experience I had never had before. We weren’t taught by a university-trained teacher. Instead, a real die-hard Director of Photography taught us. He saw us not just as students but as full-count crew members. The studio we were working with was always available. We tried things out. The wilder the ideas, the more excited Janusz became. My story was set in the windy, cold mountains in a tent. We took the storm machine and a tent into a white-painted studio, where we simulated the cold mountains. It worked. The vision in my head had been magically created on 35 mm film and was suddenly visible to others. Most Cinematographers who are geniuses at their work can’t explain their techniques. This is why teachers and critics explain them. But Janusz can tell like no other what he does to create a special atmosphere. I put this light here because it gives an extra shadow. This is something you don’t see much, and what helped me a lot in understanding the process of creating. This is the main reason why every filmmaker should consider learning from Janusz.
And there was never anything impossible to do. He was hard on the class sometimes, but in this way, he treated them on a professional level. Janusz was always open to our ideas. He made them better or explained what was wrong. He did this not only as a cinematographer but also as a director. That was very helpful as I want to go in that direction with my filmmaking. It was a very intense course, very intense, but it was unbelievable how much I learned through the experience.
Besides the technical aspect of the course, there was always time to learn from Janusz. We learned from his experience. We also learned from the problems students had with filmmaking before.
“Dancing with light”: Having the basic setup where you can move around freely was powerful. Learning how to look at the light in film was crucial. I learned to create better stories and gained a fresh perspective on filmmaking. Updating my storyboard and script felt rewarding. From the intense course, I made notes that I will carry with me wherever I go. I recommend this course. Every filmmaker should consider it. It is for everyone who isn’t afraid to learn cinematography or directing. They will learn differently and more effectively than in most universities and film schools.

I was eager to learn about the narrative role of light. There is an extraordinary link between light and the creation of mood and atmosphere. I learned a lot from your class. I was quiet, but this was my first film class ever. I absorbed it like a sponge. The dissection of the “The Silence of the Lambs” scene gave me chills. It only took a few seconds before I started seeing them too, and that was especially exciting. The technical stuff was great. I will be going through a lot of lighting setups long after the class ends. The best classes teach you to think. They also show you how to see things that you never knew existed. This was one such class.
Thanks for a great class. I will take some more next semester. I hope they turn out to be as beneficial as this one was for me.

Janusz is the greatest teacher I have ever had! Not only does he teach you everything he knows about meaningful lighting and filmmaking, but he is extremely inspirational.
“Dancing with light” is the only way to go.

I just want to say thank you again. Thank you for everything. The teachers in a class like this are the ones who make it worthwhile. They make you want to work hard and produce something good. I think most will agree that it was probably the best thing that happened to us as students. Thanks for taking the time with everything and treating us like filmmakers and not just as students.
